Robert S. Hopkins II — Near Loc Ninh city, 2 November 1967 THE CHIEF OF THE JOINT GENERAL STAFF, RVNAF Lieutenant Colonel Robert S. Hopkins II, a gallant pilot with extensive battlefield experience, consistently displayed. a willingness of cooperation and assistance to the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces in their struggle against Communism. Of particular note was Lt Col Hopkins’ contribution during Operation relieving the hostile pressure near Loc Ninh city on 2 November 1967, in which he demonstrated his gallantry while flying C-7A as an Aircraft Commander. On that date, he was flying a Tactical Emergency airlift mission carrying a Combat Control Team to the Loc Ninh airfield, scene of a fierce battle between the ARVN and allied units with the North Vietnamese Regular Communists. Despite the airfield being under heavy attack, he flew under hostile automatic weapons fire, but by his high degree of sacrifice, Lt Col Hopkins disregarded the hazards, skillfully made a successful emergency landing on the airstrip which had only about 150 meters of useable space, and was covered with unexploded mortar shells. By the gallantry of Lt Col Hopkins, the allied forces were successful in landing and delivering the Combat Control Team, the first airlift carrying the combat troops to Loc Ninh to disrupt the attacks of the communist troops and cause heavy enemy losses. THIS CITATION BY CORPS LEVEL INCLUDES THE GALLANTRY CROSS WITH GOLD STAR.
