First Lieutenant Dennis Maki
Dennis Maki, 61, a resident of Mohawk, passed away Friday evening, August 18, 2006, at Portage Health System in Hancock. He was born on August 28, 1944, in Hancock, a son of Relno and Elli (Salonen) Maki. Dennis attended and graduated from Walled Lake High School with the Class of 1962 and later graduated from Michigan Tech University with a degree in Physics. Dennis was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force 537th Tactical Airlift Squadron during the Vietnam War. He was employed at the Coleman Co., for Lear Jet and Harris Corp. in Florida until he retired in 1992. He lived in Florida and later, Phoenix, Ariz. until 2003 when he returned to the Copper Country. On July 4, 1991, he was married to the former Susan Billings. He was a member of the Evangel Baptist Church in Houghton. Preceding him in death was a brother Arthur. Surviving are his wife, Susan; daughter, Kris Tina (Clint) Walters of Iowa; four grandchildren, Tyler, Ryan, Kyra and Mya; his parents, Reino and Elli Maki of Copper City; step-daughter Kristine (Jeff) Stokes of Boyne City Mich. and their children, Zac, Monica, Ann Marie and Lauren; sister-in-law, Carol Maki of Kansas; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A Memorial service was held on Wednesday, August 23, 2006, at 11 a.m. in the Evangel Baptist Church in Houghton with Rev. Stephen Wilson officiating. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, Dennis' request would be to take every opportunity to be a blessing to someone else. |
